BRITT Assombalonga has revealed he wants to stay with Southend United and fire them to promotion this season.

And sources close to the club suggest a deal is close to being completed.

The striker, who turned 20 yesterday, has bagged 12 goals so far this term since signing on loan from Watford in August.

And, speaking ahead of Blues' trip to Fleetwood Town tomorrow, Assombalonga confirmed he wanted to remain at Roots Hall beyond January when his current deal expires.

“If it was up to me then I'd like to stay here and help Southend get promotion,” said the youngster.

“I've played a part in helping the team get up the table and now I want to be able to help them finish it off.

“I've not won promotion in my career yet so it would be my first one and I really enjoy it here so I'd like to be here for longer.

“Hopefully things can get sorted out in the next couple of weeks for that to happen but it may well be out of my hands so I don't know at this stage where I will be in January.”

But, for now, Assombalonga's sights are set on firing Blues to another victory tomorrow, when they take on play-off rivals Fleetwood Town.

The Cod Army are currently seventh in the League Two table, two places lower than Paul Sturrock's in form side.

And Assombalonga is confident Southend can continue their run of good results.

“To be honest we feel like we're unstoppable at the moment,” said the striker.

“We're nine unbeaten and we're all confident of keeping it going.

“Things are going well and scoring another goal and getting a good result would be the perfect way for me to celebrate my birthday.”
