STALKER and bailiff Anthony Gull was not put off by the hot weather affecting the carp fishing at Doggetts.
The still and balmy conditions has made the cruising fish very difficult to catch at the Rochford water.
Some fish have been very visibly feeding in the margins the size of which has reminded a lot of anglers how many big fish Doggetts really holds.
But Gull spent several days targeting one or two the larger fish.
Equipped with float tackle and a centre pin reel, Gull hooked and landed a fine 29lb mirror less than a foot from the bank.
The fight that followed was touch and go as the mirror headed for snags and freedom. Finally beaten, the mirror was banked and weighed in at 29lb 12oz.
Cliff Lamb spent a very frustrating night on the short arm as fish crashed and cruised all around him.
Spending time getting his depths right, Lamb hooked and landed a 16lb common on a six-foot zig and cork ball.
David Timms also found a zig worked for him when he landed a 16lb common and lost a bigger fish both on black foam.
Doggetts is really producing some quality roach this year plus good-size bream once anglers can get through the skimmers.
The tench have come and gone this week but most carp anglers are landing good size fish from most parts of the lake.
The best baits for general fishing has been pellets and maggots — corn alone is definitely not helping the floats to disappear.
