SOUTHEND Rugby Club’s Chris Green has been ruled out for the season after breaking his leg in his side’s final warm-up match against Rosslyn Park at Warners Bridge on Saturday.

Green, who is also the Seasiders’ director of rugby, will soon have surgery on the leg which he has also dislocated.

And he does not expect to play any part in his team’s matches this term.

“I will have the leg operated on in the next couple of days and I think that’s me done,” said Green.

“My ankle buckled under-neath me and my leg ended up going in an opposite direction, so it was broken and dislocated and it’s a bit of a nightmare to be honest.

“I won’t play again this season but what is just as disappointing was that Adam Ferrier and Brad Burr also got injured and are likely to miss games too.

“That’s on top of the injuries we already have and it’s not what you want before the start of a new season.”

Southend will look to strengthen the squad with loan signings before they kick off their National Two South campaign with a trip to Dings Crusaders. But Green is expecting a tough opening day fixture.

“We’re going there to try and win the game but it’s going to be hard,” said Green.

“I didn’t see much of Saturday’s game with Rosslyn Park. But we were only losing 13-8 until they brought on virtually a whole new team quite late on and we can take positives from that.

“However, we’ve had struggles on and off the pitch during the summer. Our aim for the season is to work hard and do the best we can.

“I’m not going to come out and make any predictions about what we want to achieve – but hopefully we can win a couple of matches early on and our confidence can rise from there.”

Green also confirmed that summer signing James Kellard would be captaining the team this season.
