DANIEL Bentley is out to banish Southend United’s set piece blues when they host Morecambe at Roots Hall on Saturday.

All four of the league goals the young Shrimpers shot-stopper has conceded this season have come from dead ball situations.

And Bentley insists the team have been working tirelessly to tighten up at the back.

“We’ve all been disappointed to concede the four goals from set pieces in our last two games and of course we’ve been working on trying to stop that happen,” said Bentley.

“The gaffer had a chat with me about my part in the goals and made me aware of things I should be doing to reduce the chances of us conceding from a set piece.

“He’s stressed that it’s vital that the first contact inside the penalty area is ours and that doesn’t matter if it’s me making a punch or a defender heading it away.

“I’ve certainly taken on board what he’s had to say and I’m sure the other lads have as well.

“I think it’s the best way to stop conceding these goals but it might take us a little time to perfect.”

Blues’ conceded twice from set pieces when losing 2-1 at Wycombe Wanderers last weekend but still sit seventh in the early League Two standings after winning their opening three matches of the new campaign.

Bentley played a prominent part in securing those successful score-lines and his fine form has seen him make the short-list for the League Two player of the month.

But the 20-year-old keeper was keen to share the praise.

“It’s an honour to have made the short-list but it’s for the whole side and how we have defended as a team,” said Bentley.

“I only found out about the nomination from a fan and it was nice to hear but I don’t expect to win it.”

Bentley is up against Fleetwood Town’s Jeff Hughes, Oxford United’a Alfie Potter and Chesterfield’s Gary Roberts for the award.

The winner will be announced tomorrow but Bentley is more concerned with Saturday’s match against Morecambe and securing a first ever victory against the Shrimps.

“I was surprised to read we haven’t beaten them before but hopefully we can at the weekend,” said Bentley.

“I watched their game against Newcastle in the League Cup and they looked very regimented and well organised.

“But I think we are too and we’ve been playing well so hopefully we can get back to winning ways on Saturday.”
