WESTCLIFF skipper Rob Smith feels his side’s convincing 74-0 win against North Walsham has sent out a message to the rest of the league.

Westcliff are back in London One North after being relegated from National Three London & SE last season.

But the manner of their opening day victory delighted Smith and showed Westcliff’s intent for the year ahead.

“It was a great way to start the season and I think it’s shown we’re serious about wanting to be up there this season,” said Smith.

“We didn’t know what to expect from North Walsham but they were well organised and we did well to beat them by so many points.

“I think everyone is determined to put things right after last season and it was great that we managed to stop North Walsham scoring.

“We know we can get tries and get points on the board but shutting them out for the whole game was very pleasing and made the result even more enjoyable.”

Jack Jones, who joined Westcliff from Southend during the summer, kicked the home side in front with a penalty.

Full-back Chris Dudman soon added a try which Jones converted before Olly Jones also went over and Jones again added the extras.

Jones touched down again shortly after and, with Jones kicking the conversion, Westcliff were 24-0 in front.

Another Jones penalty increased that advantage at the end of the first half and Westcliff continued to push forward after the break.

As a result, Jim Smith blasted through and Jones kicked the conversion.

Moments later, Greg Bannister zipped down the wing to add another try and skipper Smith then also went over.

Jones added the extras before flanker Chris Marsh was next to score.

Bannister soon did likewise to make it 56-0 and Tim Healy soon burst clear to also touch down.

Jones kicked the conversion before he finished off a fine debut by scoring two tries as Westcliff enjoyed a perfect start to the season.

Westcliff will now be looking to build on the victory when they travel to Essex rivals Colchester on Saturday.
