ADAM Thompson wants to help Southend United rediscover their best form when they host Scunthorpe at Roots Hall tomorrow night.

Thompson, who is with the Shrimpers on loan from Watford, missed the 3-1 defeat to Morecambe last weekend due to being away with Northern Ireland’s under 21 team.

But, having skippered his national team in their 1-0 defeat to Belgium, Thompson is now heading back to Blues and he is desperate for Phil Brown’s team to get back to winning ways after three successive defeats.

“Hopefully I can be involved and get my place back in the team, but it’s down to the manager at the end of the day,” said Thompson.

“I loved being away with Ireland but, at the same time, it was disappointing to miss the game for Southend.

“I tried to make sure I was available for both but it just wasn’t possible.

“I had to train with Ireland on Saturday but I’d seen we had gone 1-0 up and was really buzzing about that.

“But to then find out we lost was a real disappointment and now we all want to get back to winning ways with a good performance and result against Scunthorpe.”

If selected to take on the Iron, Thompson will also go in to the game full of confidence after playing a part in an impressive Irish performance against Belgium.

Thompson found himself up against Thorgan Hazard, the brother of Chelsea star Eden.

And he felt Ireland were unfortunate to not take anything from the game.

“We had a really tough match against Belgium but I thought we played well,” said Thompson.

“They beat Italy away 3-1 just a few days before playing us but we put in a good performance and probably deserved a draw.

“Belgium are also one of the most highly rated under-21 sides in the world at the moment and we gave them a very good battle.”

However, Thompson’s thoughts have now turned back towards League Two and he is relishing heading back to Roots Hall.

“This is probably the most enjoyable loan spell of my career,” said Thompson, who has also spent time with Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford and Barnet.

“The lads are great and I’m really enjoying my football here.

“I don’t live too far away and we’ve got a car school for training every day. I just hope they don’t forget to pick me up today!”
