BASILDON Golf Club is celebrating a fantastic double triumph after winning the NAPGC’S Siemens Bowl and the men’s championship of England.

In the NAPGC's Siemens Bowl competition for players with handicaps ranging from 19 to 28, the Basildon team travelled to Bromsgrove Golf centre for the national finals.

A chip in from a bunker for a birdie from team captain Gary Clarke and a chip in eagle on a par four from Victor Newman ensured the team got off to a great start.

That was maintained and the pairings of brothers Ken and Allan Dennison with 41 points, Gary Clarke and Paul Entwistle, Roger Hartrup and John Waugh, both pairs with 36 points and Stephen Roskams and Victor Newman with 34 points, brought the trophy home to Basildon.

They won by two clear points on the day with 145 team total points and are now the national champions in this better ball Stableford competition.

Further success for Basildon came in the form of Jason Renton who won the men’s championship of England at Woodhall Spa with a gross 73.

James Dennison also played well as he was runner-up in his division with a gross 75.

In the NAPGC’s Scratch Championship of England held at Woodhall Spa the next day, Dennison played some very solid golf and was rewarded as he won the Southern Zone.

But Dennison just lost out on the overall title of Scratch Champion after a closely contended play-off. Basildon’s John Wright came away with the remaining best nett score on 145.

In other competitions, the August midweek medal was won by John Wilson (40 points).

Elsewhere, the August monthly medal was won by Chris Stanley on countback from Albert Parrish as they both recorded a nett 70.

Captain’s Day was well supported, with Michael Watson coming away as the winner with an impressive 40 points.

In the club’s ladies section, Daphne Saitch got the better of reigning champion Sue Cable to win the club title.

Saitch was one shot ahead playing the 36th hole, but she bogied that with a four to Cable’s par three, making them all square.

The pair then had to endure a four hole play-off, with Saitch finishing one shot clear of Cable after a total of 40 holes.

This left Cable winning the Ashdown Trophy as best nett winner. Lorraine Cooper won the Burch Trophy while the ladies Harris Bowl team narrowly lost out on a place in the quarter finals.

Jen Frizzell won the lady captain’s day Stableford competition with 35 points.

In the club’s Sole Mio bogey competition, Josie Wilby played to her handicap with some very steady golf to come in all square.

Vera Allen and Daphne Saitch came second and third respectively when they each came in with minus two.

In the Rabbits and Spoons Stableford competition, Jen Frizzell had 33 points, Linda Ginbey 31 and Lorraine Cooper 27 points in the Rabbits Cup.

Pam Gray, with a very impressive 37 points, easily won the Spoons competition.
