SOUTH Woodham Ferrers began life in London Two North East with a 24-5 win at local rivals Basildon.
Woodham were promoted from London Three North East last term while Basildon were relegated from London One North.
But Basildon club spokesman Derek Lockett felt Woodham’s display fully warranted their opening day victory.
“Woodham deserved their 19-point victory as their young side played some very entertaining rugby,” said Lockett.
“However, there were some bright spots for us too.
“Newcomer Mike Thomas at number eight showed he will be an asset for the team and number six Charlie Karby was everywhere and by general accord was Basildon’s best player.”
Basildon’s try came when skipper Jamie White put away flying winger Greg Smith to score in the corner.
Basildon face another local derby on Saturday as they travel to Rochford Hundred, while Woodham are at home to Chelmsford.
