ASSISTANT manager Dave Penney feels Southend United are not far short of stringing together a run of good results.

The Shrimpers travel to Bury tomorrow on the back of four successive defeats.

But Penney is certain Blues will soon get their season back on track.

“You need to look at the bigger picture and we’re not far off at the moment, despite the results,” said Penney.

“You can’t legislate for what led to Scunthorpe’s goal on Friday night and we’ve made a couple of other errors which have also led to goals being scored against us.

“We need to get rid of them and we need to work the keeper more too but in general we’re quite pleased with the performances.

“There isn’t a lot wrong out there.

“We need to keep on working hard, fine tune in certain areas and hopefully we can get points on the board again.”

Bury have also struggled for consistency this season and currently find themselves two places below the Shrimpers, who are 15th in the League Two table.

The Shakers have been beaten in their last three games and Penney feels their manager Kevin Blackwell is still searching for his best starting line-up after making a huge number of new signings during the summer.

“They had administration problems there before they signed something like 24 players this season so there’s been a high turnover,” said Penney.

“Kevin Blackwell is probably looking to find his best team.

“We’ve had them watched a couple of times and they’ve chopped and changed the team and the system.

“They’re probably looking for what’s best but it’s always tough up there.”

Penney added captain John White was available again after recovering from the thigh strain which kept him out of last Friday’s 1-0 defeat against Scunthorpe United.

And he revealed that Blues are still trying to fill the remaining available slot they have in their squad.

“We’ve been having a look and we’ve made a few phone calls,” said Penney.

“But there’s only room for one more and it has to be the right one.

“We’re looking for a personality, who has the right character and is a leader so we won’t just bring someone in for the sake of it.

“At the moment in time nothing is happening but we are still waiting on a couple of phone calls.”
