SCRUM half Harry Branch is confident Southend Rugby Club can secure their first ever victory at Redruth this weekend.

The Seasiders have triumphed in their first two National Two South games of the season.

And Branch, who has started both of those matches, feels the new look Southend side, are capable of making it three wins in a row.

“Our team has really improved this season and I’m confident we can cause an upset against Redruth this weekend,” said Branch, who turned 20 on Tuesday.

“We’re all buzzing, the whole squad seem much fitter and the demeanour of everyone is really positive.

“We’re confident we can at least put in a good performance and the players we have in our team will fight right until the very end.

“We’re fully aware of the fact we’ve never won there before but they’ve lost their opening two games and hopefully this can the time we beat them.”

Branch will also be aiming to help make that happen as he looks to continue his own good start to the season.

The former King John School pupil spent six months playing in Australia for the Gold Coast Breakers last term.

And he is certain that helped him develop even further as a player.

“Before I went over to Australia I was told I wasn’t releasing the ball quick enough so that was something I knew I had to work on and I think I have,” said Branch.

“There was far more running rugby played in Australia which really helped me and I’m able to spot space much quicker as well.

“I missed a few matches out there after dislocating my collar-bone but, despite that, it was still an amazing experience.

“It hardened me up as a person and I think it certainly made me a better player too.”

Branch now wants to show that in his performances for Southend.

But he is enjoying being back in the thick of things at Warners Bridge.

“There were quite a lot of changes made while I was away but everyone who has come in to the squad has definitely added something,” said Branch.

“The players who are still here have really improved as well and we’re looking to keep this good start we’ve made going.”

Southend have centre Alex Harrison, who is on loan from Wasps, available this weekend but prop Michael Guess and number eight Daniel Legge are both doubtful with injuries.

Centre Chris Vaughan is also definitely unavailable for the Seasiders.
