MAX Whitlock has worked his way into two finals at the World Gymnastics Championships in Belgium.

The 20-year-old, who trains at Basildon’s South Essex Gymnastics Club, has qualified for the all-round final as well as advancing in the pommel horse.

And Whitlock insisted he was pleased with his performances in Antwerp.

“I made a few little mistakes but overall it was a pretty good start for me and hopefully I can build on that during the championships,” said Whitlock.

“I started well on high bar, made a mistake on floor but I was happy to try out my new routines.

“Pommel went well, rings I made another mistake on but I stepped it up well for the last two pieces.

“Having competed at Olympic Games and European Championships I think it gave me some idea of what to expect but every event is different and I’m looking to get as much from these experiences in the run up to Rio.”

Whitlock’s all round final will be held tomorrow evening, with the pommel horse showdown taking place on Saturday.

Whitlock qualified 10th for the all-round final with a total of 86.941 (FX 14.533, PH 15.408, SR 12.900, VT 14.900, PB 14.600, HB 14.600).

His pommel routine also showed a good variety of work and he dismounted safely to score 15.408 points.

With the potential to add difficulty in the final, Whitlock will be looking to improve his score and challenge for a medal after finishing third in the Olympic final last summer.

Hungarian Kristian Berki won gold in London and was favourite to do the same in these World Championships.

But he failed to qualify after falling off during his routine yesterday and that leaves Saturday’s final wide open.

Both of Whitlock’s finals will also be screened live on BBC television.

Whitlock’s fellow Britons Dan Purvis and Kristian Thomas also qualified for finals.

Purvis finished eighth in the all-around rankings with a total of 87.031 while his 15.266 on the floor secured him a place in the top eight.

Thomas scored 14.933 on the vault to book his place in the final with the fourth best result in qualifying.
