Spencer Prior is hoping to see his Shrimpers side use the hostile atmosphere at Cardiff City this Saturday to their own advantage.
Prior made 96 appearances during three years with the Bluebirds before returning to Roots Hall in the summer of 2004.
And the veteran defender - who returned from a groin injury to play for Southend's reserves against Colchester yesterday - knows exactly what to expect from the home supporters.
"It's a very hostile place to have to go and play," said Prior.
"If we start well there then the fans could be quick to get on top of their team because the expectations they have are far greater than any other side I have played for."
Prior is keen to make the trip back to Wales but faces stern competition for a place in the side as Peter Clarke, Adam Barrett and Efe Sodje, who is now free from suspension, have all been in fine form.
The former Norwich and Derby defender is fit to figure though after recovering from his latest niggling knock.
"I've had a few little injuries this year but it's just because I'm getting old," said the 35-year-old.
"But I have some good memories from my time at Cardiff and winning the play offs with them was a massive achievement so it would be nice to go back."
