WESTCLIFF want to clinch promotion from London One North tomorrow, without having to rely on anyone else for a favour.
Table-topping Westcliff head to North Walsham knowing victory will clinch them the title and a return to National Three London & SE.
And that is exactly skipper Ian Dartnell wants to happen.
“After we won last weekend and Eton Manor lost it’s in our own hands now and we want to make the most of that,” said Dartnell.
“It was a surprising and unexpected twist and we certainly didn’t expect Eton Manor to lose at Ruilsip because they didn’t really have too much left to play for.
“But it’s given us a real boost and, although we could still lose and go up tomorrow, we don’t want that to happen.
“We want to take care of things ourselves and that means going there and winning the game.”
However, winning at North Walsham will not be an easy task for Westcliff.
The Norfolk side are sixth in the standings but have not been beaten at home for two years.
However, Westcliff’s rivals Eton Manor also face a tough test as they travel to third placed Luton.
And Dartnell knows both teams will be in for a difficult afternoon.
“We’re in for a difficult game because there’s a long journey to consider as well and Luton will be hard to play for Eton Manor too,” said the captain.
“I have no idea how we will find out how they’re getting on but hopefully we won’t need to worry about that any way.”
Victory would also secure a return to the National Leagues for Westcliff after just one season away and that is also a huge motivating factor for Dartnell.
“To bounce back at the first attempt would be a great achievement,” said Dartnell.
“It would be a huge morale boost and would also show young players in the area that it wouldn’t just be Southend playing in the National Leagues in this area.”
