CONCORD Rangers boss Danny Cowley called the decision that saw his side beaten 1-0 at play-off rivals Havant & Waterlooville as the worst he had ever seen in football.

With a little over 10 minutes remaining, referee Derek Eaton gave the hosts a spot-kick for what he saw as a foul by Steve King on Christian Nanetti as they both jumped to win the ball following a deep Havant free-kick into the box.

Cowley said that no one in the ground thought it was a penalty and, in fact, all the Havant players thought Mr Eaton had given a foul against King and were trotting back awaiting the Concord free kick when they realised what had happened.

With the visiting players understandably livid, Concord lost their control in the final 10 minutes with Cowley himself being sent from the dug-out, while Havant - who converted the spot kick through Nik Ciardini - were reduced to 10 men when Nanetti was sent off for a tangle with Danny Glozier.

It all meant that Concord’s dream of the play-offs took a bit of a dent.

After beating Maidenhead 3-1 less than 48 hours earlier, the Beachboys were on a roll and although they are by no means out of the play-off reckoning – they are four points off fifth-placed Dover with a game in hand – it’s Havant who are now the favourites as the south coast side are sixth, two points short of the top five and with two games in hand.
