BASILDON ended their London Two North East campaign with a 17-15 win against South Woodham Ferrers.
Both sides tried to play open rugby and it was Basildon who looked the more threatening with their centres Daniel Dieu de la Bellefontaine and Ben White punching holes in the Woodham midfield.
Scrum half and captain Jamie White broke the deadlock with the first try.
Woodham struck back within minutes but Basildon’s lead was restored by a thunderous break from flanker Charlie Karby.
He was returning to the team after a lengthy injury absence and showed great determination to run in from 20 metres to make it 12-10 at half-time.
It was a bit of a disjointed second half but Basildon continued to look the better side.
Flanker Gary Burke scored from a drive involving the whole pack and with 10 minutes left Basildon were looking safe at 17-10.
But Woodham hit back with an unconverted try and they could have won it with the last kick of the game but the penalty drifted wide.
