ROCHFORD Hundred finished their London Two North East season with a 47-26 win against Enfield Ignatians at Magnolia Road.

The victory was Rochford’s 12th in their last 13 games.

And that brought to an end a league campaign which pleased head coach Graham Pratt.

“It’s been a reasonably successful season,” said Pratt.

“We finished a very strong third and our nearest rivals, Chelmsford, were 19 points below us.

“With 20 bonus points in the bag there was no team better than us in that department and we played some tremendous rugby in getting those points.”

But he added: “Parts of our game were sloppy on occasions and we made more basic errors than are acceptable if we want to progress next season.

“If certain games had gone differently we could have been in the play-off position and looking for promotion. But it is generally agreed, we are not quite ready just yet.

“Another season in this league will help head coach George Fouche put the finishing touches to the fine work he and the boys have put in and go all out for promotion next season.”

Two tries in the opening 10 minutes ensured Rochford’s latest success.

The first effort was well-executed with captain Sam Tape towering up in the line out to give a perfect ball to Dan Bracknell and then Tom Ashton.

He saw the gap and sped through before flanker Tom Corbet was on hand to take the pass and run in under the posts for Ashton to convert.

The second try was a forward drive over the line and a delighted Scott Horsburgh took the credit for the touchdown.

Enfield responded well and a good move soon caught out a sluggish Rochford defence.

Rochford’s rivals made the most of it as Enfield flanker David Gear went over for a converted try.

But, the home side soon hit back with a try from second row Greg Whight before Horsburgh bagged his second try of the game.

Ashton kicked both of the conversions to make it 26-7 but Ignatians replied when Lotanna Mbonu powered through to reduce the deficit with a converted try.

However, Rochford bagged the final points of the first half when Ashton showed his class with an individual try and conversion to bring the score to 33 – 14 at the break.

The second half was a much closer affair as the North London outfit upped their game and the boys in black went down a gear.

Full advantage was taken when prop Stephen Taylor clawed back five points with a try and then centre Keir Bonnar sped through to score a converted try to cut Rochford’s lead to 33-26. But the hosts’ Darren Spencer soon barged through to score, with Ashton again adding the extras.

Top try scorer Matt Stewart then completed touched down the final try of the game which Aston kicking the conversion.

Rochford will now turn their attentions to the Essex Cup where they will take on Basildon in the quarter finals later this month.
