FREDDY Eastwood and Bedsente Gomis both worked their way back in to the thoughts of Southend United manager Phil Brown by impressing in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Gillingham yesterday.
Eastwood was among the goalscorers in a comfortable 5-0 win at Blues’ Boots & Laces training ground while Gomis looked solid at right-back.
And they are now being considered for recalls against Rochdale this Friday.
“Freddy got himself a goal and looked very bright so he’s certainly given me food for thought and will be in my thoughts when it comes to picking the starting line-up for the Rochdale game,” said Brown.
“He came on at the weekend and it wasn’t that long ago he scored against Torquay, so he will come into consideration and I think Bedsente will as well when it comes to selecting the substitutes.”
Gomis has made just one substitute appearances since joining Blues in January after a lengthy spell on trial.
But Brown is now considering bringing him back in to the squad after being impressed by his displays at right-back.
“Gomis could well be back on the bench because he gives us cover in the full-back positions which we haven’t really had this season,” said the Shrimpers chief.
“He has looked good at right-back and can certainly fill in for John White if we need him too during the run in.
“If Ben Coker gets injured then John could go over to the left and Gomis could play at right-back so it’s a good option for us to have.
“The fact Gomis can play in four or five positions is a massive advantage for him when we look at contracts for next season.”
Luke Prosser, Adam Thompson, Conor Clifford, Marc Laird, Anthony Straker and Barry Corr were also in action against the Gills.
Jack Payne opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the Shrimpers before Eastwood also hit the back of the net.
Youngsters Jack Bridge and Marlon Agyakwa were then both on target along with Charlton Athletic trialist Ellis Brown.
