BARRY Corr all but secured Southend United’s place in the League Two play-offs by firing them to a 1-0 win against Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall yesterday.

Corr fired home the only goal of the game midway through the second half to put the sixth placed Shrimpers six points ahead of eighth placed Oxford United with just two games to go.

Only a 10 goal swing can now stop Blues making the top seven.

And Corr was thrilled to continue his fine goal-scoring form as he aims to repay his team-mates after being sent off against Bury.

“The red card I got was soft but I was silly and after it happened I wanted to repay the lads and the fans for the support they have shown me,” said the Irishman, who has scored three goals in four games since his ban.

“I obviously didn’t want it but maybe the little break I had actually did me a bit of good because I had been playing a lot of games up front on my own and it might have been taking its toll a bit.

“But I’ve got three in four now which I’m delighted about and this win was massive for us because we wanted to get everything sorted and take the pressure off of the last two games.

“We could see the fans were getting frustrated and I think that made us frustrated too but we kept patient and we got there in the end.”

Corr, who has now scored 11 goals this term, is now aiming for more of the same as the Shrimpers bid to secure a successful end to the season.

And he is certain there will be no let up from his team-mates.

“We’re not getting at all carried away about this,” said Corr.

“Our target was to win the play-offs not just make them so we haven’t achieved anything yet and there’s still an awful lot of hard work to be done.”
