Paul Brush has blasted his reserve side following their "disgusting" performance against Colchester on Tuesday.
The Shrimpers - who included eight players with first team experience - were easily brushed aside 2-1 by a youthful U's side at Roots Hall.
And that left Brush fuming.
"They should have been comfortable against a Colchester team of teenagers so I was disgusted with their performance," said the former Blues defender.
"The level of quality and attitude shown was far from being good enough."
Brush added the players should have used the match to impress watching manager Steve Tilson.
But the club's managerial staff are now scratching their heads over who to include in the squad for Saturday's trip to Cardiff City.
"Most of these players believe they should be in our first team," said Brush.
"After a performance like that though the hardest job ahead of the weekend is to find five of them worthy of being on the bench."
