SOUTHEND United defender John Egan is focusing on the most exciting few weeks of his career and not his long term future at the club.

The on loan centre-back has now been informed that he will be leaving Sunderland at the end of the season.

But he is not yet looking beyond his involvement in the League Two play-offs with Blues and helping them beat Burton Albion at Roots Hall tomorrow.

“The play-offs and the games we have coming up are definitely going to be the most exciting matches I’ve ever been involved in during my career so far,” said Egan, 21.

“I’m thinking about them and making sure I help get promotion rather than my long term future anywhere which I haven’t really given much thought to at this stage.

“There’s no rush and we have some important games to play and I’m not sure what will happen after that.”

Egan has formed a superb defensive partnership with fellow loanee Jakub Sokolik since they were first paired together against Bristol Rovers in late March.

The duo have kept five clean sheets in their eight games together and have tasted just one defeat during that time.

The good run of results has taken them up to seventh in the League Two table.

And tomorrow’s game will determine who the Shrimpers take on in the play-offs.

But Egan is not too concerned who Blues will be facing.

“I don’t think it really matters who we play against,” said the defender.

“I’m not really too sure if results ahead of the play-offs really matter either.

“I’ve always watched them on television and I’m not sure it really counts for too much.

“However, you always want to be winning matches and we will be going out for all three points against Burton.”

The Brewers are currently fifth in the League Two table and could yet also end up playing Southend in the play-offs.

Fleetwood Town and York City are the other possible opponents.
