I’M really pleased with how things are going for us at the moment and it was great to get a fourth win in five games against Cheltenham Town.
It put to bed our run without a home league win on a Tuesday night and, joking around before kick-off, I went around telling everyone it was Wednesday so maybe that did the trick!
The first half was good from our point of view. We looked solid and when the goals went in I really felt as though you could see Cheltenham wilt.
It was also good for Joe Pigott to get another couple of goals but I have to say I was disappointed by our second half display.
Some people might say it’s human nature to ease off when you’re on top but I don’t agree, for me it’s just poor play.
When there’s a game there to be won convincingly you should go and win convincingly, especially as 2-0 is always a dangerous score-line.
One goal for Cheltenham would’ve set up a harem scarem finish and that’s the last thing anyone would’ve wanted.
Thankfully, that didn’t happen and we looked very strong at the back, especially Adam Thompson who battled for everything and won most of it too.
I thought he was up against a good striker in Denny Johnstone and he did very well to keep him quiet.
I was also pleased for Daniel Bentley to get another clean sheet after all the nonsense he had on Twitter.
That’s been put to bed now and for us to have kept seven clean sheets in a row is quite phenomenal.
JAKE CASSIDY DESERVES PRAISE, JUST LIKE JOE PIGOTT
JOE Pigott is taking the limelight at the moment with the goals he’s scoring but I think Jake Cassidy deserves to be praised as well.
Jake is working incredibly hard, he’s mobile and he’s certainly taking the hits for us up there.
He was unlucky not to score on Tuesday night but hopefully he can get off the mark when we play Accrington Stanley this weekend because I think that would do him the world of good.
Behind those two we also have Barry Corr, Shaq Coulthirst, Myles Weston and Lee Barnard pushing for places and I don’t think I’ve had such a wealth of attacking options since coming to the club.
BEN COKER SHOULD BE FINE FOR ACCRINGTON CLASH
BEN Coker was forced to come off during our win against Cheltenham but it was just a precautionary measure.
It was a really brave decision for Ben to take to the field in the first place because he had been struggling with an injury and had to come through a fitness test just before the game.
But he picked up another slight knock during the game and we thought the sensible thing would be for him to come off.
He didn’t come in for treatment yesterday though so I’m fully expecting him to train today and be available for Saturday’s game, along with David Worrall.
He trained with Graham Coughlan yesterday after recovering from an illness and it will be great to have him back, even if it does give me another real headache when it comes to picking the squad!
ASTOUNDED BY ADAM BARRETT'S RECEPTION
I HAVE to admit to being being quite astounded by the reception Adam Barrett got when he came on to the pitch as a second half substitute against Cheltenham.
The noise was louder than anything I’ve ever had for Freddy Eastwood or Lee Barnard and it was a fantastic moment.
Adam is a brilliant man to have around the training ground and dressing room and it was pleasing to get him on to the pitch.
He’s had to wait a little while for his chance after picking up a slight calf problem and because of how well Adam Thompson and Jerome Binnom-Williams have been playing.
That meant he hasn’t played for about a month and at times he was a little ring rusty against Cheltenham.
But he will benefit from that involvement and he’s certainly someone I’m enjoying working with.
