SOUTHEND United’s players began their pre-season training back at Boots & Laces yesterday.
The squad began the day in the gym before heading out onto the training pitches in the afternoon.
And Shrimpers boss Phil Brown was happy to see his players already in good shape.
“The players look in good condition already,” said Brown.
“They’ve had a longer rest this time because we didn’t make the play-offs and one or two of them look a lot more relaxed.
“I’ve not spoken to them for a couple of months but that was purposeful on my part.
“I wanted them to go away and have a think about things and have a break from my voice too.
“Last season was a season of consolidation but that was never our intention.
“This season - hopefully with the investment the chairman will be putting into the squad - we can have a real go at things and that’s what we’re already working towards.”
Striker Nile Ranger and trialist midfielder Tom Rosenthal were both training with Blues yesterday but former Fulham defender Stephen Arthurworrey was not in attendance after picking up a slight injury.
