SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was delighted to see Stephen McLaughlin back to his best in Saturday’s 3-2 win against West Ham United.
McLaughlin scored two and made the other as Blues saw off the Hammers in front of more than 1,000 fans at Great Wakering Rovers’ Burroughs Park base.
And Brown was thrilled to see the Irishman on form as he strives to bounce back from an injury-hit 2015/16 season.
“Macca had three injuries last season which was horrendous for him, “said Brown.
“But he’s had a good pre-season this year, he looks stronger and fitter and it’s really good to see.
“We want him to keep it going now because his quality has never been in doubt.”
McLaughlin played the full 90 minutes on the left flank, while Brown also used the game to take a look at all three of his trialists.
Centre-backs Jakub Sokolik and William Edjenguélé both played 45 minutes against the Hammers, while striker Ronan Murray was given the last 20 minutes.
But Brown is keen for them to feature again against Newcastle United tomorrow night.
“If they’re willing to stay around, I would like to have another look at them against Newcastle,” said Brown.
“I want to see them in action against tougher opposition.”
