SOUTHEND United’s Glanford Park hoodoo continued with a convincing 3-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United this afternoon.
The Shrimpers – who have now not triumphed in all 13 of their visits to the Iron’s ground – were brushed aside by their hosts.
And Phil Brown’s side now find themselves sitting third from bottom in the League One standings.
Southend’s best chance to score came in the opening five minutes when John White’s right wing cross found Adam Barrett but his close range header was superbly saved by former Shrimpers goalkeeper Luke Daniels who also recovered well to smother the rebound.
Moments later, Blues’ on loan midfielder Adam King fired straight at Daniels from long range before Scunthorpe hit back with Duane Holmes working his way past Adam Thompson before having a well struck shot smartly blocked by Ted Smith.
In reply, the Shrimpers threatened again when a misplaced pass from Neal Bishop seemed to send David Mooney clean through on goal.
But Daniels raced out to make it difficult for the striker whose shouts for a foul landed on deaf ears.
However, after surviving the scare, the hosts recovered strongly to open the scoring in the 36th minute, with Paddy Madden on target.
The striker – who has a fine scoring record against the Shrimpers – was picked out by Duane Holmes’ right wing cross and netted with an impressive low, first time finish.
Five minutes later, the Iron doubled their lead when Josh Morris’ right wing cross found Kevin van Veen who fired home a powerful effort at the near post.
Things almost got worse for Blues just before the break when Scott Wiseman’s right wing cross struck the top of the crossbar.
Southend boss Phil Brown responded by making a triple change at half-time as Ben Coker, Stephen McLaughlin and Jermaine McGlashan entered the action in place of Harry Kyprianou, Adam King and Jakub Sokolik.
The new look Shrimpers soon threatened with Ryan Leonard fizzing a right wing cross across the face of goal but Scunthorpe soon replied and made it 3-0 in the 57th minute when Josh Morris slammed a powerful 25 yard shot into the right hand side of the net.
Holmes then had a powerful effort parried out by Smith before Madden saw an effort ruled out for offside.
Moments later, the lively Holmes inches wide of the right post after a purposeful run down the left hand side before Scunthorpe completed three minutes from time when substitute Richie Smallwood sent a stunning volley into the top left hand corner of the net.
