SOUTHEND United midfielder Renei Batlokwa has a first team debut in his sights this season.
The 20-year-old has played in both of Blues’ pre-season fixtures so far this summer.
And Batlokwa is keen to remain involved once the League One season gets underway.
“My target for this season is to make my first team debut,” said Batlokwa, who is about to enter his sixth season with the Shrimpers.
“It’s been good to have played in both of the friendlies, even though I felt the Wakering game maybe came a bit too soon for me.
“I had been training with the under 23s the day before but I felt the game against Aberdeen went much better and I was pleased with the way I played.”
Batlokwa came close to scoring against Aberdeen after creating the opportunity with a fine piece of skill.
And the youngster is enjoying playing out wide.
“The last couple of years I’ve played on the wing and I’m used to that role now,” said Batlokwa, who had previously played more centrally.
“To be honest I’m happy to play anywhere and I know I just have to keep making the most of any chance I get, even in training.
“I’ll work hard to try and impress and hopefully I’ll get an an opportunity to play in the first team at some stage.”
And, with that mind, Batlokwa has been putting in the work during pre-season training.
“It’s been tough, especially in Spain with that heat,” said the midfielder, who was with Thurrock before joining Blues.
“It’s been hard going but I enjoy it and hopefully it will pay off once the season gets underway.”
