A BROMFORDS School pupil is celebrating after triumphing at the Minibike World Championship.
JJ Speller, who has enjoyed success in the sport for a number of years and races for Pit Bike Camps, came out on top in the major event held at Champs Parc, Kettering.
And JJ’s parents admitted they still cannot believe their 12-year-old son is a world champion after emerging victorious in the youth 125 junior class.
Jake Speller, JJ’s dad, said: “We’re very proud and it’s his best achievement yet by far.
“We’re so happy. JJ went into the competition with confidence to get a podium finish.
“He has been in the top three all year in the Minibike British Championship, so coming in first place was well within his sights at the Minibike World Championship.
“We’re just so proud of what he has achieved.”
The Minibike World Championship, which is run by Minibike Champs, is known as the pinnacle of minibike racing.
The contest saw 360 of the best mini riders from around the world go head-to-head.
With the Minibike World Championship being held over three days, the Basildon-based JJ had to negotiate practice and qualification sessions before competing in heat races.
And a lot of travelling is involved in order to allow JJ to flourish in the sport he loves.
Jake added: “JJ has been riding and competing for five years.
“He started off riding at Action Park, at Bonville Farm, Wickford, because it was his local track but then that closed down.
“JJ then met new friends and he now travels all over the country to compete.
“He has achieved so much over the last five years, including coming in third place at the Minibike Supercross at the International Dirt Bike Show.
“JJ also came fifth in the Minibike World Championship last year and got third in the Minibike British Championship earlier this year.
“Competing in the events involves a lot of hard work and, having been crowned world champion, JJ will be hoping to impress next year as well.”
While JJ has been competitive on the track, he has also raised thousands of pounds for friend Mickey Bennett, who is suffering from leukaemia.
Jake confirmed: “JJ started racing with Mickey when he first got into the sport and they are very good friends. JJ wants to help in any way he can because he wants to see Mickey back to health.”
