SOUTHEND United have signed midfielder Jacob Mellis from Gillingham.
The 30-year-old has joined until the end of the season but the contract includes the option of a further year.
Mellis joined Chelsea from Sheffield United for £1million when he was just 16 but he never made a first team appearance at Stamford Bridge.
The midfielder spent time on loan with Southampton before enjoying a two year spell with Barnsley.
Mellis joined Blackpool in 2015 but was soon sent out on loan to Oldham Athletic.
A two year spell at Bury then followed before joining Mansfield in 2017.
Three years later Mellis joined Bolton and then arrived at Gillingham in August 2020.
In total, Mellis has made 313 appearances in his career and has scored 19 goals.
