THIRTY years ago today Southend United went top of the old Second Division table with a memorable 4-0 win against Newcastle United at Roots Hall.

Here is what the Shrimpers squad that afternoon are now upto. 

PAUL SANSOME: The ex Shrimpers goalkeeper now runs Alpine Tool Hire in Kent.

DEAN AUSTIN: Austin went into coaching following his retirement and returned to Roots Hall to be part of Steve Tilson’s backroom team before leaving in 2008. He went on to work closely with Brendan Rodgers at both Reading and Watford and also managed Northampton Town. He is now director of football at St Albans City who play in National League South.

PAT SCULLY: The Irishman went into management after finishing his playing career and had spells in charge of Kilkenny City, Shamrock Rovers and Limerick. He now works as a taxi driver in Dublin.

SPENCER PRIOR: Prior returned to Southend United for a second spell and, after finishing his career at Roots Hall in 2007 he emigrated to Australia. Prior now coaches APIA women’s side in the National Premier League in New South Wales. He also works full-time in recruitment.

CHRIS POWELL: Powell went into coaching after his retirement and returned to Roots Hall as manager between January 2018 and March 2019. Powell has also managed Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town. He now coaches at Tottenham Hotspur and is part of Gareth Southgate’s backroom team with England.

ANDY ANSAH: Ansah now works as a football choreographer and has some of the biggest sporting stars in the world as his clients. Ansah has worked with the likes Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Usain Bolt, Wayne Rooney and Neymar among others.

KEITH JONES: The former midfielder has been coaching in America since 2006. He was previously in charge of the Atlanta Silverbacks Women before moving to SC del Sol who are based in Arizona.

JOHN CORNWELL: The ex midfielder was last known to be running a pub in the Black Notley area.

STEVE TILSON: Tilson enjoyed a successful stint as Southend manager between 2003 and 2010, winning back to back promotions as well as securing a memorable League Cup win against Manchester United. Tilson is now in charge of Isthmian North side Heybridge Swifts and runs the football academy at South Essex College in Southend.

IAN BENJAMIN: The former striker now runs a tool hire business in Northampton. He continues to play six-a-side football every Tuesday and his side have lost just four times in two years!

BRETT ANGELL: Angell is still involved in football with coach education for New Zealand on their A and B licence courses. He is also technical director for Napier Marist Football in Hawkes Bay as well as getting involved in real estate as a sales consultant in Napier.

PETER BUTLER: Butler’s managerial career, after hanging up his boots, began with a caretaker spell at Halifax Town but he now bosses further afield. The former midfielder is currently in charge of Liberia’s national team having previously bossed Botswana. Butler has also managed in Indonesia, South Africa and Malaysia.

ADAM LOCKE: The former winger now runs his own tree surgery business.

MANAGER

DAVID WEBB: Now 74, Webb is enjoying his retirement living in Southwold. He now gets his football fix by watching Chesterfield where his son Daniel is assistant manager.
