SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher declared himself delighted with his side’s start to their pre-season schedule this afternoon.

The Shrimpers beat Kings Langley 4-0 in their first warm up fixture of the summer.

And Maher was full of praise for the players.

“I’m delighted,” said the former Blues midfielder.

“It’s been a really tough 10 days for the players so they’re naturally going to be quite leggy in the first game.

“But everyone got 45 minutes and I’m really pleased with how it went.

“The fans came in good numbers too and it’s good to have football back on a Saturday afternoon.”

Sam Dalby put the Shrimpers in front with a well-taken effort in the first half before Jon Benton, Dan Mooney and Callum Powell were on target after the break.

Summer signing Mooney curled home a fine free-kick on his first Blues outing.

And Maher was impressed by the new boy’s display.

“He’s a very good footballer and we saw that last year with Altrincham,” said Maher.

“He will be important from set pieces and it’s pleasing to see him get off the mark.

“Jon Benton took his goal ever so well too and so did Sam and Powelly.

“It’s been good for all of the new signings and a good day for everyone really.”

And for Maher that also included handing opportunities to more of the club’s youngsters.

Luke Reeve and Louis Arrowsmith started for the Shrimpers along with Oli Coker while Benton played the second half and Maher is keen to call upon those who have come through the youth ranks at Roots Hall.

“They’ve been with us pre-season and it was important they got minutes,” said Maher.

“I’m really keen to keep players coming through.

“Oli Coker did ever so well but I’m pleased with all of them.”

Blues will now be back in action at Canvey Island on Tuesday night and Maher is planning to gradually increase how long players stay on the pitch.

“We have eight games in pre-season so it’s going to be a gradual build up and hopefully everyone will be in a good place coming August 6,” said Maher.

“I have to say their attitude and application has been first class.

“There’s a lot of work still to be done behind the scenes and we’re still building the club.

“It will take time but we’re pleased with everyone involved.”
