DAN Mooney started the way he wants to go on for Southend United on Saturday.
The summer signing curled home a fine free-kick during Saturday’s 4-0 win at Kings Langley.
And Mooney is keen to build on his first outing for Blues.
“To get my first goal in my first game was nice,” said Mooney.
“I know it’s only pre-season but you want to be finding the back of the net and I’m pleased to get going.
“I obviously want to build on this now and try to make the goal the first of many.
“Hopefully I can stay on free-kicks now too.”
Mooney, who joined the Shrimpers from Altrincham, bagged Southend’s third goal of the game in Kevin Maher’s side’s first outing of pre-season.
Sam Dalby, Jon Benton and Callum Powell were also on target for Blues against their Southern League Premier South hosts.
And Mooney was pleased to get the friendlies underway.
“It was good to get the minutes in the legs and to get a feel of the ball again,” said the 23-year-old.
“That was the main aim and it was good.
“You want to just play to be honest, even if you are feeling a bit tired and heavy legged.
“But once the game starts you forget all about it anyway and just get on with it.”
Mooney will be back in training with the Shrimpers today before turning his attentions towards tomorrow night’s trip to Canvey Island.
“I’m looking forward to Tuesday and building up the minutes going into the season,” said Mooney.
“It’s all about fitness at this stage and it’s been hard work but it’s been good and I’ve settled in well.”
