PROMISING Southend United midfielder Oli Coker is keen to use pre-season to prove he is ready to for first team football.
The 19-year-old did well in Saturday’s 4-0 win at Kings Langley on Saturday.
And Coker, who has been with Blues since he was eight, is now looking to make the most of any chance coming his way at Canvey Island on Tuesday night.
“I want to fight for my shirt in the team this season and hopefully I can cause the gaffer some problems choosing the team,” said Coker.
“But whatever happens it will be a good experience and I’m really enjoying my first pre-season with the first team.”
Coker has made three substitute appearances for the Shrimpers since working his way through the youth system.
But he saw his progress halted by injuries last season.
“I had a few niggles at the start of the season then I fractured my back at Christmas,” said Coker.
“After that I rolled my ankle in my first game back but I’m feeling in good shape now and did some strength work over the break to keep on top of it all.”
Coker was also boosted by ending the previous campaign on loan at East Thurrock United.
But his sights are now firmly set on the Shrimpers, who he has supported from a young age.
“I’m getting used to the tempo and the physical demands and it’s been good,” said the former Greensward School pupil.
“I’m really determined but I’ll keep my head down and keep on working hard.
“I’m learning every day because I’m still young but I also want to show I can handle it and kick on from there.”
