SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher always feared Harrison Neal would not return to Roots Hall.
Neal, who impressed on loan at Blues from Sheffield United last season, will spend the forthcoming campaign with League Two side Barrow.
And a disappointed Maher fully understands the midfielder’s decision.
“It was always something we knew might happen,” said Maher.
“If he was coming back to this level he said he loved his time here and would come back.
"But obviously going into the League is a step up for him and I’m sure it’s something Sheffield United wanted for him too.
"I’m delighted he gets to do that and I’m sure he will do very well.
“We’re all pleased for him."
Neal made 22 appearances for Blues during a five month loan spell at Roots Hall.
