SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was pleased with the performance but not the result at Roots Hall this afternoon.

The Shrimpers were beaten 2-1 by Torquay United.

And Maher was disappointed by the defeat.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Maher.

“The amount of possession, the balls in the box and the number of shots all go in our favour apart from the one stat that matters.

“From what I’ve just been told in there we had 25 shots and they’ve had two on target.

“The result is the result but I can’t fault the performance.”

Torquay opened the scoring after just four minutes with Ryan Hanson heading home.

And Maher was left ruing the slow start.

“We started slowly for the first 10 minutes and we were a little bit tentative for some reason,” said Maher.

“We got done at the back post from a delivery and they scored off the back of that.

“It gives them something to hold on then.

“We’re forcing the issue and pressing trying to find that bit of quality we needed to get a goal.

“We felt like it was coming but it wasn’t to be.”

Will Goodwin put Torquay 2-0 in front before Chris Wreh netted a late header for Blues.

But the Shrimpers were unable to conjure up a late leveller.

“Performance wise it was good but I don’t want just the performance. I want everything,” said Maher.

“We got a goal back but we should have had more.”
