IN the Norman Plum Trophy, a pairs better ball competition, Basildon had a great win over Lexden Wood.
Each club fields six pairs, with three playing at home and the others away.
Despite the bitterly cold winds the away team won by five points, while the home team won by a a very respectable 17.
The home pairings were George Eaton and George Fincham, Pete Richens(vice-captain) and Vic Newman, Terry Spinks and Bill Newson.
Playing away at Lexden Wood were Alan Cable and Jim Carr, Chris Meaden and Dennis Hawkes, and brothers Paul and Derek Entwistle.
The best away better ball points were Cable and Carr with 34 and best home went to Richens and Vic Newman (42).
Basildon also had a great victory over Belfairs Golf Club in the Clapham Common, a pairs greensomes competition.
With one Basildon team already knocked out of this competition, it was up to Shaun Holding and Michael Watson, Ricky Heather and John Carlos, Rob Worthington and Paul Mayor to keep the flag flying at home.
Meanwhile Jamie Dennison and Glen Eastman, Gordon Longmuir and Lawrence Bullard, and Jamie Dyer and Steve Watson were in action for the new town club at Belfairs.
The best away score went to Jamie Dennison and Glen Eastman with 33 points.
The best home score, despite both players having their balls taken by troublesome children on the same hole, were Rob Worthington and Paul Mayor, also on 33.
