ESSEX added just one run to their overnight total before being bowled out at Derby.
The county re-started their innings on 269-9 at 4.30pm after much of the second day of their County Championship Division Two fixture against Derbyshire was lost to rain.
Ravi Bopara added the single run to take his total to take his innings to 137 before he was given out lbw off Tom Lungley's delivery.
Bopara anchored the innings and spared the county's blushes as many of his team-mates fell cheaply.
England batsman Alastair Cook's 27 was the next highest knock as Essex were dismissed for 270 off 85.2 overs.
