SOUTHEND mayor Daphne White did the honours by sending down the first wood as Southchurch Park Bowls Club got their outdoor season underway.
The mayor was greeted by club president Chris Petty-Mayor, his wife Beryl and the president of Greenways Ladies' BC, Carol Andrews.
After bowling the first wood, Councillor White was presented with a basket of flowers by Southchurch Park captain Michael Nunn.
Also attending the event was local councillor Ron Woodley, who expressed an interest in taking up the sport.
Following the official opening, more than 50 members of the Shaftesbury Avenue club enjoyed a mixed drive in the early season sunshine.
