ADAM Paterson and Sam Chesher turned on the style to win at the Essex Winter Series finals.

Paterson, who is a member at Hockley tennis club, was unbeaten in the whole season.

And he did not lose a set during that time en route to the boys' 8.2 final, where he defeated Stock's Tom Partridge 6-1 6-1.

Westcliff Hardcourts' Chesher had a good run in the boys' 9.1 event and played brilliantly to beat Ryan McDonnell in the semi-final.

He then beat Connaught's Matthew Porter 7-6 6-2 in the final.

The win was particularly pleasing for Chesher as Porter has a higher LTA rating.

Southend Lawn's Matthew Atkins lost out on a tiebreak to James Pottle of Frinton in the boys' 9.2 final.

Atkins lost the first set 4-6 but won the second 6-3 before losing 1-0 (1) in the tiebreak.

Billericay's Gemma Holley lost 3-6 3-6 to Rachael Porter of Connaught in the final of the girls' 9.2-10.2 event.

Maria Ba had a walkover to win the girls' 8.1-9.1 final.

The Essex Winter Series saw 48 one-day junior ratings tournaments take place at indoor tennis centres around Essex.

Players were awarded two points for a match win and one point if only one set was won.

Points were then tallied up and the top players were invited to the finals at Redbridge ITC, where they were pitted against players of a similar rating.

The finals were organised and refereed by Lesley and Ian Pitt, from Westcliff, as were most of the tournaments.

l RAYLEIGH lost 5-3 to Woodford Wells in Essex Men's Veteran Division 2A.

Gary Coombes, John Blewett, Phil Alderton and Will Cooper played for the Watchfield Lane club.
