SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher was keen to focus on just the football following a heated finish to the Shrimpers’ 1-1 draw with Woking at Roots Hall.

The two teams clashed in stoppage time during a melee which saw several players pushed towards Blues’ fans in East Stand, with one supporter also appearing to get involved.

But Maher chose not to speak too much about the incident which originally started with Woking midfielder James Daly attempting to take a throw in which had been awarded to the Shrimpers.

“The referee and the linesman had given us a throw in,” said Maher.

“Their player has tried to grab it and it’s created something which adds to the tension around the place.

“I’m not going to comment on other stuff because I’ve got to concentrate on football.

“The authorities will deal with whatever they need to deal with.”

Blues midfielder Noor Husin, who had his shirt ripped in the incident, was yellow carded by referee Jason Richardson along with Woking’s Daly, Luke Wilkinson and Josh Casey.

But Maher felt the officials played a part in things boiling over.

“It’s created by the officials allowing the game to become something it probably shouldn’t have been,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“I should be here talking about football and what a good game it was but we’re ending up talking about flashpoints created for no reason.”

A second incident also appeared to happen the other side of the dug-outs after the final whistle with Woking players involved in a verbal exchange with some Southend supporters.

However, Woking’s players were eventually ushered away with Blues’ senior football strategist Stan Collymore among those acting as a peace-maker.
