A FRUSTRATED Southend United supporter has his say.
Does Southend Utd have a future?
It is 61 years since my first visit to Roots Hall.
I haven’t lived in Southend since 1970 and now North Norfolk is my home.
I’ve been through it all over the years and, although I don’t get to many games now, I still nervously “live” every minute of every match.
This year I actually ran down the garden punching the air when we signed Kacper Lopata.
Not only did it mean we had signed a very good player but it suggested we had some money.
A couple of weeks later we are back in the old cycle of unpaid taxes, embargoes etc.
As a fan, I want my club in the Football League but, most of all, I want my club to exist.
I suspect Ron Martin has the club’s interests at heart. But at what cost?
I would like a new ground, but would be happy with an improved Roots Hall.
I would like my team in the Championship but would prefer a League Two team where everybody got paid.
Most of all I would like the truth told about where we really stand!
This continual financial yo-yo damages supporters’ spirits.
It must have an effect on the players too.
One day it will be a bridge too far and we’ll be gone, with Bury FC and the others.
I suppose I would like a new owner. I would like a fresh start.
We have the fan base, we have the goodwill of thousands of people in and around south Essex but we don’t have any stability.
I worry because you can only rely on loyalty and goodwill for so long.
Do we have a future?
