WES Fonguck is determined to build on his goalscoring return to Southend United’s starting line-up.

Fonguck had been on the bench for six successive games before being recalled against Scunthorpe United on Saturday.

And the midfielder is keen to keep on impressing when the Shrimpers head to Maidstone United on Tuesday night.

“The goal I got is good for my confidence but you can’t get too carried away,” said Fonguck.

“It’s onto the next one now and there are games coming thick and fast.

“All the focus is now on Maidstone and making sure we do well there too.”

Fonguck will be going into the game on a high after helping Blues beat Scunthorpe 3-0 at Roots Hall.

And the 25-year-old was pleased with the team’s display.

“It was a very professional performance from the boys,” said Fonguck.

“As a team it was nice to get three goals because we haven’t been scoring as much as we would like.

“It was good to get a clean sheet too.”

The victory saw Blues move up to ninth in the National League standings and also saw Fonguck score for the first time since signing from Barnet in the summer.

“It was very nice to score,” said Fonguck.

“The gaffer has been on at us midfielders to chip in with goals and I would like to add more goals and assists to my game so it was nice to see that one hit the back of the net.”

The goal came following a frustrating spell out of the starting line for Fonguck.

But he did all he could to ensure he was ready to make the most of the next chance coming his way.

“You have to stay ready because you never know when the manager will call upon you again” said Fonguck.

“It was pretty tough but that’s what comes in the game.

“We have a lot of midfielders competing for the same spot and to be fair to the boys they were doing well.

“We were unbeaten so I had to be patient for when my time came again.”

Fonguck will now be hoping to stay in the side for Tuesday night’s trip to Maidstone.

And he knows what to expect against the Kent club.

“We know what Maidstone are like and we’ve done a bit of work on them,” said Fonguck.

“At home they try to get after teams but after Saturday we want to create a bit of momentum.

“We want to climb up the table and keep the unbeaten run going.”
