SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was pleased with performances at both ends of the pitch during Blues’ 3-0 win at Maidstone.

Goals from Callum Powell, Jack Bridge and Chris Wreh saw the Shrimpers pick up all three points at the Gallagher Stadium.

But Maher was also happy to see the Shrimpers keep a clean sheet against a Maidstone side fighting to get out of the drop zone.

“We knew they weren’t in great form coming here but we knew how tough it was going to be,” said Maher.

“It definitely was tough and they had a right go.

“They caused us some problems early on and Collin (Andeng Ndi) has had to make a very, very good save.

“But we responded with a great goal from Powelly (Callum Powell) after that and we were really pleased with that.

“From then on we looked a real threat and could have a few more.

“Overall we’re very pleased. It’s three points and three goals again and a clean sheet too.

“Now we move onto Saturday’s game with York.”

Blues will head into this weekend's game sitting eighth in the table after back to back 3-0 wins.

And Maher had words of praise for all three goalscorers.

“Bridgey has got the ability to do that,” said the Blues boss.

“We speak to him about assists and goals and he’s got to keep adding them to his game.

“He did it brilliantly tonight, it was a hell of a finish.

“Powelly’s was a great strike too and Chrissy got his at the end as well which was the least he deserved.

“He was very good and deserved that goal.”

Wreh returned to the starting line-up in place of Jake Hyde who was not risked on the 3G pitch.

And Maher feels added competition for places is now proving key.

“If you come out the side or someone comes in they have to fight to keep the shirt,” said Maher.

“That’s the position we wanted to get into.

“We couldn’t do it as much as we wanted early in the season but now with the bodies we’ve got coming back it’s pushing the standards and forcing the lads coming in to perform.

“I’m delighted.”
