ECHOSPORT talks to Aldershot historian Pete Stanford ahead of Saturday's match with Southend United.

Aldershot are currently 18th in the table. What have you made of the season so far?

"It's mainly been awful and very much a continuation of the previous four seasons!

"Prior to the dismissal of boss Mark Molesley in mid-October, the highlight was the Shots beating FC Halifax Town 5-1 at home in mid-September (one of only four wins in 15 games in all competitions).

"After Molesley had been sacked, legendary former Shots manager Terry Brown and then Academy boss Ross McNeilly both changed our style of play, and put together a run of three consecutive league victories which really lifted the fans.

"Unfortunately, that proved to be a false dawn as we've now had three straight defeats."

What are your hopes for the rest of the campaign?

"I honestly can't see us finishing outside the bottom half of the table.

"Also, it'd be great to have a decent run in the FA Trophy."

What’s the latest on the hunt for a new manager?

"To quote an announcement that the club put out on November 22nd: As mentioned previously, the club had a large number of applicants for the vacancy and work began on narrowing these into a shortlist.

T"alks have been ongoing with a number of these applicants and we are now in the final stages of the process.

"Current interim manager and academy manager Ross McNeilly is also being given the opportunity to discuss his vision of the future of Aldershot Town’s first-team affairs.

"The board are hoping to come to a decision as soon as possible but are keen to ensure that due diligence comes before urgency."

How did the fans view the dismissal of former Blues boss Mark Molesley?

"On the whole they weren't surprised when he was sacked a few hours after a dire performance that saw us exit the FA Cup at Chelmsford Cit.

"However, many fans thought that it was long overdue as we'd been pretty awful for a while.

"They were disappointed that we played very defensively.

"Just one up front at home was commonplace and we didn't seem to have a plan B when we went 1-0 down."

Who is the danger man?

"On their day, we have several, but our inconsistency makes that a difficult question to answer.

"Goals-wise, Inih Effiong is our top scorer with six with Justin Amaluzor, Tyler Cordner and Tommy Willard all one goal behind."

What's the team news?

"Other than Josh McQuoid and Harry Panayiotou both being sidelined by injury, there's not a lot to tell."
