SOUTHEND United midfielder Cav Miley was left ‘over the moon’ after choosing the perfect time to score his first goal of the season.
Miley bagged a brilliant late winner for Blues in their 2-1 triumph at Torquay United on Saturday.
And the 27-year-old was delighted to finally work his way onto the score-sheet in his 36th display for the Shrimpers.
“The boys have been bantering me for a while now but I always said I would get one, said Miley.
“If that’s the one I get I’ll be happy and I’m over the moon with the win.
“It wasn’t the greatest of games but the way we won it and the celebrations with the fans, staff and players it was brilliant.
“I loved it.”
Miley, who had previously not scored since netting for Eastleigh at Wealdstone in November 2020, ran from the halfway line before firing home in stoppage time against the Gulls.
And he never thought about teeing up team-mate Noor Husin who was making a break to his right hand side.
“I’ve been told by people that the whole place was just screaming pass it, pass it but I didn’t look up once,” said Miley.
“The pitch was a bit bobbly but I got a bit of luck and managed to put it in the net.”
Blues seemed set to pick up just a point when Torquay substitute Lewis Collins equalised five minutes from time.
But Miley felt the response of the Shrimpers showed the togetherness of Kevin Maher’s side who bounced back to win despite not being at their best.
“We weren’t as good with the ball in the second half as we should’ve been,” said the midfielder.
“We probably weren’t as organised as we should’ve been from a long throw at that time of the game when they scored as well but it sums the group up at the minute that we came back.
“It’s not been easy but it shows what we’re all about and that we’re all pushing in the same direction.”
But the Shrimpers – who are still waiting to be paid for January – have shown that spirit throughout the season in incredibly testing times.
“We’re together every day,” stressed Miley.
“Day to day we enjoy coming in and that hasn’t changed throughout all this.
“We concentrate on football and control what we can control.
“We come in and everyone sticks around. “We do outside the club as a group as well and that won’t change between now and the end of the season.”
And Blues continue to have the backing of their brilliant supporters who roared them on throughout Saturday’s game.
“They’re unbelievable,” said Miley.
“They were louder than the whole of Notts County on Tuesday who are a big club but everywhere we go it’s the same.
“Part of the reason this is an attractive football club is the fans and we need them with us the whole way.”
