SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher hailed the character of his side after seeing them fight back from a goal down to beat Wealdstone 2-1 in the final game of the season.

Goals from Wes Fonguck and Harry Cardwell saw Blues pick up all three points at Roots Hall.

And Maher was again pleased with the spirit shown by the Shrimpers.

“One thing you can never question about this group of players is the character,” said Maher.

“The way they’ve gone on for the shirt despite everything they’ve had to deal with is testament to them and they’ve done it again today.

“I thought we’ve played well too.

“In the first half Wealdstone have scored on a break away after we could have taken the lead and been two or three up.

“But once we got the first one we were the team on top and you could see they were faded a bit.

“We were good value for the win and could’ve had more.”

And Maher was also quick to praise Blues’ fans.

“To have 8,500 in Roots Hall is brilliant and it’s like the days I’ve had here in League One and the Championship,” said Maher.

“To have that in the National League is unbelievable.”

"I’m delighted for Hobbo too.

But, despite the win, the future remains uncertain for Blues who have been in a transfer embargo in September.

And that will affect Maher's plan's for next season.

"I know what I want to do, that hasn’t changed," said Maher.

"What we can and can’t do remains to be seen but that’s something maybe I shouldn’t speak about now."
