A SOUTHEND family once listed as one of the richest in Essex have ruled themselves out of buying Southend United.

The Blues are in crisis on and off the pitch just 18 days before the start of the National League season.

And supporters are desperately hoping a buyer can soon be found to keep the Shrimpers alive.

Speculation was rife among fans on social media yesterday that the Gould family – who run a London property group and were reported to be the seventh richest people in Essex back in 2014 – were in discussions to take over at Roots Hall.

But a spokesman for the Gould family - previously linked with the Regis Group and Roslin Beach Hotel - has confirmed there is no truth to reports linking them to the club.

He said: “The Gould Family has absolutely no intention of buying Southend United nor any land associated with the club in any way whatsoever. They do however wish the club well.”

The Shrimpers are facing deep financial problems and were given an additional 42 days in the High Court last week to pay off an outstanding tax debt of £275,000.

The club have been in a transfer embargo since September due to money owed to HMRC and have just 14 contracted players.

Staff have not been paid for three months and fans are worried the Blues will not be allowed to kick off the National League season at the start of August.

Speaking at Saturday’s protest outside the house of Shrimpers chairman Ron Martin, passionate supporter Bradd Cummins said:” I think we’re all worried we won’t be able to start the season.

“We know what needs to happen and that football creditors all need to be paid, but we just don’t know whether or not Ron Martin will do it.

“We’re all just desperate for some good news and for the club to be saved but we all know we’re running out of time.

“It’s heartbreaking for us all.”
