TOM Clifford admits it is bittersweet to be leaving Southend United.
The 24-year-old is looking forward to kick-starting his career with King's Lynn.
But the defender is also sad to be leaving the Shrimpers.
"I’m buzzing for the new season because hopefully I can play many more games than I did last season and enjoy it," said Clifford.
"I was 11 when I joined Southend though, so it’s bittersweet to leave the football club.
"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working my way up the age groups to finally play for the first team but I think this is something my career needs right now."
Clifford made 66 senior appearances for the Shrimpers but played just six times last term.
The defender's last start came in a 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield in mid-September.
And, while Clifford was frustrated not to feature more regularly, he also acknowledged the high level of the side's performance.
"It was a very frustrating season for me but the boys and staff did a really good job finishing where we did last season considering everything that was going on with the club," said Clifford.
"But of course all you want to do as a player is be out on the pitch playing football."
That desire to play ultimately led to Clifford leaving Roots Hall.
And he is looking forward to being reunited with King's Lynn boss Mark Hughes.
"I know my new manager from my first loan at Bishop's Stortford so it was just from really how the move came around," said Clifford.
"They needed someone and I jumped at the chance obviously because last season wasn’t the best for me personally.
"It’s a good group of lads and staff there so who knows what will happen but I will give my best 100 per cent."
Clifford will be hoping to help King's Lynn build on last season's second placed finish.
But he will also be keeping an eye on Blues who have endured a troublesome build up to the National League campaign which gets underway this weekend.
"It's obviously not been the easiest of times recently at the club but I think everyone has dealt with it really well and are just looking forward to the season starting now," said Clifford.
"It’s a great bunch of players there and the staff are great so I’m sure they’ll do well again as a collective.
"I hope they do and that things get sorted."
The Shrimpers host Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall in their opening encounter on Saturday but Clifford's departure leaves them with just 15 contracted players.
