SOUTHEND United striker Callum Powell felt the Shrimpers surprised everyone but themselves by thrashing Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

Blues battered the Latics 4-0 at Roots Hall despite their chaotic build up to the season.

But Powell - who scored the Shrimpers’ opening goal – said Kevin Maher’s side knew they were capable of such a commanding performance.

“Outside the changing room I’m sure no-one predicted that after what we’ve gone through and endured but we know the players we’ve got,” said Powell.

“We won’t sing from the rooftops about what we think we’re capable of but everyone who has seen us play knows that's the type of thing we’re capable of.

“It was really enjoyable and we’ve surprised a lot of people.”

Oldham have been heavily tipped for promotion this season.

But the Latics never looked like troubling the Shrimpers, despite that high billing.

“If you look at all the predicted tables they have Oldham right at the top and us right at the bottom,” said Powell.

“You don’t read too much into it and it’s not something to really care about but ultimately it’s about doing the business on the pitch and we’ve done that.”

Powell also helped that happen by breaking the deadlock with a well placed left footed shot.

And he was delighted to get off the mark at the earliest possible opportunity.

“We dominated the game from start to finish and for me to score on the opening day is superb as well,” said Powell.

“It’s the best feeling to help the team get an important win and an enjoyable one too.

“You always want to get off the mark as quickly as you can and we’ve ticked all boxes today.”

And that happened despite a troublesome build up which Powell admitted had been tough to deal with.

“What we’ve been going through has been difficult,” said the 27-year-old.

“We haven’t been able to play in front of the fans at home so it was great to be back today and they were loud from start to finish.

“It really makes a massive difference.

“After an early goal like that they get behind you and spur you on.

“It was great to be back and coming out for the warm up it gives you a shiver down your spine.

“It’s superb to have them behind you every week.”

Blues’ off-field issues also restricted them to just two 90 minutes friendlies during pre-season.

But Powell still feels in good shape.

“I had just over 90 minutes in pre-season but I pride myself on being in the best shape I possibly can all the time,” said Powell.

“I worked incredibly hard in the off season away from Southend and, since we’ve been back I’ve made sure I’m in the best shape I can be.

“I felt good today and touch wood we can keep moving forward with that.

“Match fitness is a lot different but I think we all feel good.

“I’m sure people will look at us and say we won’t be fit but we’ve got a good group in there who are professional about what they do and fitness levels are good.”
