SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher insists Dan Mooney has a big part to play for the Shrimpers this season.
Mooney had been linked with a move away from Roots Hall this summer.
But Echosport understands the attacking midfielder is now happy to be stay with Blues.
And Maher is delighted to have him among his options in attack.
“Dan’s a great part of the group and the lads love him,” said Maher.
“He loves his football and with the ability he’s got he’s going to be a big player for us this season.”
Mooney came off the bench to score against Oldham Athletic on the opening day of the season.
But he is still working his way back to full fitness after suffering a calf problem during pre-season.
“He had a stop start pre-season with injury so he’s building up as we go,” said Maher.
“Watching it back it was a tremendous finish but that’s the ability we know he’s got.
“We’re pleased with him and he showed what he’s capable of on Saturday.”
