WES Fonguck is keen to become more of an attacking force for Southend United this season.

The midfielder got two goals and one assist in his 38 appearances last term.

But Fonguck is determined to do far better this time around.

“I want to be more aggressive in the final third because I was disappointed in myself last year,” said Fonguck.

“I want to create more chances and have more shots at goal.

“I want to have more of an effect on games in the final third.”

And those aims have been encouraged by Blues boss Kevin Maher.

“The gaffer has said about the goalscoring numbers not being great from midfield last season,” said Fonguck.

“We’re trying to improve that and I want more assists and pre-assists too.”

Blues host Eastleigh on Friday night and will head into the game looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Hartlepool United at Roots Hall.

“We started brightly like we have been doing all season,” said Fonguck.

“But we gave sloppy goals away which is unlike us.

“I thought we gave them their goals rather than them earning them.

“We’re disappointed and when we made it 2-1 we should’ve reacted better and seen out the game.”

Blues have now taken six points from their first four games.

But he remains eager to add to that tally as quickly as possible.

“When you lose you you have the chance to put it right and that’s what we’ll be looking to do,” he added.
