THERE will be no mistaking Gus Scott-Morriss’ will to win when Southend United take on Rochdale tomorrow.
The Shrimpers right wing-back has returned from a two-match suspension after being sent off at York City for an offence committed by a team-mate.
And it was a tough one for Scott-Morriss to take.
“It was really frustrating because on the pitch you want to say it wasn’t you but you can’t do anything about it,” said Scott-Morriss.
“It’s upsetting but it happens and I think you have to flip negatives into something positive.
“It gave me a bit of a rest whereas some of the lads haven’t had that and I’ve got to use that to hopefully give more energy on Saturday.”
Scott-Morriss missed matches against Maidenhead United and AFC Flyde before being recalled for Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Aldershot Town.
And Scott-Morriss was pleased with the level of performance.
“It was a good point and I thought we were very good,” said Scott-Morriss.
“We’ve just assessed it in the meeting and there were so many good things we did.
“It was just that final piece we were missing which we’re most disappointed about. But it was a good all round performance, we dominated really and had everything.”
The share of the spoils saw the Shrimpers move off the foot of the National League standings.
And Scott-Morriss is now turning his attentions towards Saturday’s match with eighth placed Rochdale.
“They’re a good side and it’s away from home but if we perform like we did on Tuesday we’ll be more than happy,” said Scott-Morriss.
“We believe we can pick three points up but we keep our expectations in the building.”
But Blues will again be roared on by a fine away following.
And Scott-Morriss knows the supporters will again be playing their part.
“They’re superb and there’s a tight bond between us,” said Scott-Morriss.
“We see fans saying it’s the best it’s been in a long time and they get us through a lot of games.
“Sometimes you can feel leggy or fatigued and they’re a massive plus for us.”
However, it will not just be the fans singing this weekend as the Shrimpers finally have two recent signings - David Martin and Mauro Vilhete - who will be performing their initiation songs.
“They’ll be singing, don’t worry about that,” laughed Scott-Morrss.
“We’ve been trying to get everyone out to sing!
"We’ve been trying to get David Martin to sing for weeks but now they’re signed we’ll be making sure they do it.”
